There’s a local shop owner who has been helpful to me answering questions about the rear end for Crappy Vic and I’d like to take him a six-pack of beer. What’s an unquestionably excellent beer that I can find at the Safeway? (It won’t be PBR because I hope he’ll answer my future questions for me...)

When I don’t know if someone is into craft beers, I think Coors Banquet is a good way to go.

My favourite one at the moment is Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold - good price (even with fucked up Ontario prices) and no weird off-tastes, just a good, plain lager.

If there are German beers, you can’t go wrong with brands like Hacker-Pschorr, Erdinger, or Paulaner.

Holy cow, that’s a loaded question. I would opt for something local, since micro brews are all the rage these days and it’s nice to support local. However, some of these brews can have a very strong flavor. For some reason, some people like IPAs. No idea why. And beer can be a very individual thing. That said, if somebody is a regular beer drinker, the best beer in the world is free beer.

I would stay away from generic US beers like Bud, Miller, PBR, etc. Do you have Shiner Bock in your store? It’s not great beer, but it’s approachable and has some cachet. It’s what all the tourists drink in Austin. I’m a pilsner guy, so any decent German pilsner would fit my bill. Heineken is terrible. I drank a fair bit of Firestone 805 blonde ale  last time I was in Cali. Should be easy to find, and I liked it. More interesting than a simple American pilsner.

Kona Big Wave Golden Ale; it’s a beer that I think anyone can happily drink, not from one of the big breweries, and is  available lots of places.

The one beer that’s drinkable to everyone is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Or just about any craft pale ale, to be honest. Dale’s Pale Ale is another universally loved one.

Just about anything from Lagunitas, Bell’s, or Oskar Blues is solid. Some of this may be regional, but those brands are pretty wide.

When I delivered subs for Jimmy John’s, a guy tipped me a 6 pack of Two Headed IPA because he ordered with a minute of us closing. Super thoughtful.

I am not sure where you live, but Yuengling is a great choice; otherwise anything from Sam Adams should suffice as well. Great medium between the light lagers and the heavy crafts.

PS I’ll gladly take your PBR payment whenever and wherever :)

I’m not disputing that. I don’t drink it, but it’s still really popular. They made a prickly pear beer once that I found completely undrinkable.

A micro-brew lager is probably a safe bet. It’s not a strong flavor like an IPA or stout but will be miles better than bud or miller.

Hard to go wrong with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Not nearly as hoppy as any “modern” IPA but has good flavor and is generally available everywhere. However, if someone hates hops, it’s not for them.

You could always ask . A guy did me a huge favor and I asked his son what kind of beer he liked. The answer was very specific, so I was glad I asked. But then, I worked at a ski shop and when asked what kind of beer he liked, the owner always said “cold,” he’d drink coors light or Sip of Sunshine Double IPA and anything in between, because it’s the thought that counts. If he hated it, one of his employees would drink in instead. There was always beer in that fridge.

I’d probably go with a locally brewed Amber (good but wide appeal), or if he is more of a traditional beer drinker, the Coors Banquet is a good choice, (and I believe an underrated mass market beer.)

Something mellow but not a major macrobrew, maybe? A nice local/regional pilsner, blonde or bock might work. I tend towards Ze Germans for simple, mild, malty or wheaty stuff, but I might avoid anything beyond a kristallweizen if you go for a wheat beer, just in case they’re not a wheat beer fan. I’ve had decent luck with Victory (PA) and Bell’s (MI) making pretty tasty but widely available stuff, too . Karbach (TX) was recently picked up by a macro group, too, but their Crawford Bock’s pretty middle-of-the-road and my reliable standby at COTA’s events. Also, Karbach does easily transportable cans!

(I see that Shiner suggestion, and while it’s probably okay for a free thank-you beer —they do make samplers now that’d take the guesswork out of it !—it has a syrupy mouthfeel anymore and I’m bl eh on it.)
